Parsing the Empire

From 2003 until September 2011, Bill Keller was Times executive editor. Earlier he was a reporter and Washington bureau chief. He's now an op-ed columnist and Times Magazine contributor. His columns are best avoided. They shun truth and full disclosure. They avoid telling readers what they most need to know. Managed news misinformation substitutes. All of it fit to print isn't fit to read. It's typical Times journalism. Readers are cheated. They're betrayed. They deserve better. Growing millions seek it. Alternative media sources provide it. One day perhaps they'll entirely replace sanitized corporate  journalism. It can't come a moment too soon.   George Seldes (1890 - 1995) called corporate journalists of his day "prostitutes of the...
Money power in private hands games the system. It does so destructively. Controlling money, credit and debt for private enrichment assures speculation, booms, busts, inflation, deflation, instability, crisis, recessions and depressions. The Cypriot crisis alone begs the question. Money power in public hands could have avoided what's now happening. Ordinary Cypriots face horrific hard times. So do most people in Euroland countries and America. Force-fed austerity is policy. Banks accounts no longer are safe. Nor are public pensions. Insiders get advance word and flee. From March 1 - 15, 132 companies with Cypriot deposits shifted hundreds of millions of euros offshore. Less fortunate unsecured account holders may lose everything. Small...
Throughout his tenure, Obama governed lawlessly for the monied interests that own him. He's waged no-holds-barred war on humanity. His strategy includes homeland tyranny, fear-mongering, saber rattling, hot wars, proxy ones, drone ones, domestic political ones, geopolitical ones, financial ones, anti-populist ones, sanctions, subversion, sabotage, targeted assassinations, mass murder, cyberwar, and more.   In May 2009, Obama prioritized cybersecurity. He called cyber-threats "one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation" and  "America's economic prosperity in the 21st century will depend on cybersecurity." He ordered a top-to-bottom review. A Cyberspace Policy Review report followed.   Obama...
Voting for Obama or Romney is like choosing between death by hanging or firing squad. Either way you're dead.   The same goes for choosing Republicans or Democrats. Each party replicates the other. On issues mattering most, not a dime's worth of difference separates them.   They're pro-corporate, pro-war, pro-Israel, anti-populist, anti-civil and human rights, and anti all values real democratic societies cherish.   Post-November 6, nothing will change. Duopoly power assures harsher times ahead. Expect direct and proxy imperial wars to continue. New ones will be launched. War on terror/existential threat deception will justify them.   Waging war on freedom rages domestically. Hypocrisy, not democracy, is policy....
On October 16, Hofstra University (Hempstead, NY) hosted the second Obama/Romney charade. Demagogic blather again took center stage. Ritualistic theater was featured. Grade F spectacle defines it.   Bombast substituted for substance. Vital facts about the state of the nation and world were excluded. Viewers wasted two hours watching. What they most need to know wasn't covered. Instead they were bombarded by duplicity and indifference toward growing human needs.   Duopoly fascism in America excludes alternative voices. Third party candidates are virtually shut out. Getting ballot access alone presents enormous challenges. Major media coverage is denied or too little to matter.   How many American know about other...
Replicating post-WW II occupations is planned for Afghanistant. Sixty-seven years after war's end, US troops still occupy Germany, Japan and Korea. They're part of America's growing empire of bases. Status of forces (SOFA) agreements establish the framework under which US forces operate abroad. The Department of Defense Technical Information Center calls them agreements "that defines the legal position of a 'visiting' military force deployed in the territory of a friendly state." They delineate: "the status of visiting military forces (and) may be bilateral or multilateral. Provisions pertaining to the status of visiting forces may be set forth in a separate agreement, or they may form a part of a more comprehensive agreement...These...
Money power runs America. So do lobbies representing all corporate and other interests. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) represents dozens of influential companies. They include Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Bell Hellicopter Textron, Sikorsky Aircraft, Goodrich, General Dynamics, Honeywell, Booz Allen Hamilton, Hill & Knowlton, and many more promoting unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) drone technology. Against targeted countries, drone warfare is America's newest sport. From distant command centers, operators kill by remote control. They use computer keyboards and multiple monitors. UAVs stand ready round-the-clock for missions. Predator drones perform sanitized killing on the cheap...
It was typical Obama, taking credit for what should be condemned. He's a fraud, a crime boss, a war criminal multiple times over, a moral coward, and serial liar. His State of the Union address was beginning-to-end doublespeak, duplicity, coverup, and denial of failed policies complicit with Wall Street crooks, war profiteers, and other corporate favorites while popular needs go begging. Not according to fawning New York Times writers, however. Suppressing truth and full disclosure, Helene Cooper headlined "Obama Speech Makes Pitch for Economic Fairness" saying Obama: "pledged on Tuesday night to use government power to balance the scale between America's rich and the rest of the public....toward an economy 'built to last' and what he...
America's Marines Hymn begins with the lines, "From the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli."  Throughout 2011, Washington and rogue NATO partners committed Nuremberg level crimes. They made Libya a charnel house. Terror bombing caused massacres, mass destruction and human misery. Libya remains wracked by violence, instability, and illegitimate governance. Occupation, colonization, pillaging and exploitation intend raping Libya for profit. On January 13, Cynthia McKinney said Obama has 12,000 US troops in Malta heading for Libya. McKinney said: "The NTC (National Transitional Council) not only has to contend with a vibrant, well-financed grassroots-supported resistance, but the various militias....are also fighting each other." "I...
On January 5, Obama held a first ever administration Pentagon news conference. Its thinly veiled hawkishness explained his 2012 military agenda. Its Asia/Pacific region policy challenges China and Russia and it's Middle East presence stresses confrontation and belligerency. Globally it plans relying increasingly on naval and air power. It also stresses destabilization, confrontation, and war when other methods don't turn independent states into client ones. He stressed counterbalancing China and Iran. Mindful of Republican opposition to defense cuts, he said America will "avoid repeating the mistakes of the past when our military was left ill-prepared for the future. As commander-in-chief, I will not let that happen again. Not on my watch...
