La longue durée —the long run—was an expression made popular by the Annales School of French historians led by Fernand Braudel, who coined the phrase in 1958. The basic argument of this school is that the proper concern of historians should be the analysis of structures that lie at the base of contemporary events. Underneath short-term events such as individual cycles of economic boom and bust, said Braudel, we can discern the persistence of “old attitudes of thought and action, resistant frameworks dying hard, at times against all logic.” An important derivative of the Annales research is the work of the World Systems Analysis school, including Immanuel Wallerstein and Christopher Chase-Dunn, which similarly focuses on long-term...
September 17, 2012 Dear Mr. President: He's been in Afghanistan for two weeks, but I feel as though I've aged 10 years. This is my only son's sixth deployment in harm's way. I was supposed to get together with friends Saturday night. But when I read that two more NATO troops were killed in Helmund Province in a green on blue attack, I cancelled my plans. Then I found out they were Brits. This morning I heard that four American troops were killed by Afghans in uniform. Another mother's son is dead. Not mine. I don't understand why our troops are there. First we were told it was to destroy al Qaeda. But Bin Laden is dead and al Qaeda has not been in Afghanistan in large numbers in many years. They are now scattered around the world in...
Three Local Organizations Partner To Roll Out Solar Program Three local organizations have joined together to help Vermonters save money by installing solar hot water systems. Sunward Systems is providing the solar collectors, EnergySmart of Vermont is installing the systems, and Washington Electric Co-op (WEC) is offering a discount to its members who go solar. All residents of Washington and Orange counties will receive $500 off an installed solar system. WEC members will receive an additional $250. The program will move to other areas of Vermont next year. A typical family of four in Vermont spends $600 per year to heat water for domestic use. The Vermont Solar Hot Water Initiative will harness the power of the sun to reduce...
Occupied Cascadia is a documentary film both journalistic and expressionistic.  Exploring the emerging understanding of bioregionalism within the lands and waters of the Northeast Pacific Rim, the filmmakers interweave intimate landscape portraits with human voices both ideological and indigenous.  Stories from the land contrast critique of dominant culture, while an embrace of the radical unknown informs a re-birthed and growing culture of resistance.  Filming began during the outset of the populist “Occupy” movement, and finished by joining the voices seeking to re-contextualize popular revolt within our life-world as a movement to decolonize, un-occupy, and re-inhabit the living Earth through deep understanding and identification with...
Welcome to our 2012 Vermont Independence Party here at the Vermont Statehouse legislative chambers – “the people’s house.”  We are here today to recognize the reality of our 21st century situation. We live in a time unique in human history, beset by deeply rooted global crises – climate change, Peak Oil, and a nation/Empire engaged in endless war and endless debt. The 20th century is history – and the 21st century will end up looking very little like today. As Vermonters interested in both sustainability and self-determination, we recognize both the independence and interdependence of our lives – embodied in Vermont’s state motto Freedom and Unity” – inscribed here on our prototype of a Second Vermont Republic silver coin. We also...
I bring greetings from Cascadia. They’re watching on the livestream. This I know: the day will come when the whole world will be watching you, Vermont. It’s a tremendous honor to be here. When you had your first convention in 2005, I came up from Massachusetts to attend. I had to. It wasn’t just intellectual curiosity—though it was that. And it wasn’t just to lend moral support, though it was that, too. And it wasn’t that fine and righteous feeling of incipient rebellion. It was those three words: Second Vermont Republic. Those three words are a spark that could set history on fire. We need you, Vermont. What’s burning right now is the whole continent. This July was the hottest on record. Two million acres burned. And it wasn’t just the...
This year we welcome guest speakers: LIERRE KIETH, author of DEEP GREEN RESISTANCE (2011): "The Second Vermont Republic takes its place in a long line of movements for justice that were willing to face the nature of power and then face it down. The planet does not simply need more gardens; it needs resistance against the forces that have been plundering our collective garden for 10,000 years." -Lierre Kieth MORRIS BERMAN, author of WHY AMERICA FAILED: THE ROOTS OF IMPERIAL DECLINE (2012) Vermont independence "is a fascinating possibility, the more so if secession turns out to be contagious, and not just limited to Vermont." -Morris Berman Please join us and enjoy: -Pecha Kucha presentations on Finance, Fuel, Food and Vermont Independence...
Dear ORION, We encourage our neighbor Sue Halpern, one of Vermont's best wordsmiths, to probe more deeply next time she interviews our junior Senator Bernie Sanders. Her simplistic portrait of "Bernie" masks more disturbing elements embedded in his so-called "Man of the People" record. For example, Bernie’s campaign literature decries corrupt and wasteful military spending. He says “we have tripled military spending since 1997, we must take a hard look at a bloated and wasteful Defense Department”. Yet he supports the Vermont National Guard receiving 18-24 more F-35 fighter planes! The F-35 program is THE poster child for military contractor waste and mismanagement: a $1.5 trillion program with no mission which, like the F-22, will be...
Friends and Neighbors, Many of you are concerned about the F-35 being based in Vermont. The best way to encourage debate on this matter (with a Governor, U.S. Senator and U.S. Representative who have indicated support for the F-35 before any of the important facts were known) would be to take one of the following actions at the primary elections August 28, 2012. 1. PROGRESSIVE: The coalition strongly urges this action, because there are many openings on this ballot and therefore good chances to elect a nominee. Please vote in the primary election on the Progressive ballot, including the following write-in votes: a. U.S. Senator - Peter Garritano b. Representative to Congress - Rosanne Greco c. Governor - Annette Smith d. State Senator...
