Ferrisburgh, Vermont farmer Erik Andrus with his rice crop. The rain woke me up this morning, again.  Falling now in sheets across my ponds, fruit trees, and vegetable beds, drenching the sheep and the ducks alike is the seventeenth or eighteenth inch of rain that’s fallen this spring, and – at this writing on May 19 – we still have more than a month to go.  “Normally” we get about four to six inches of rain in May total; but we’ve already received about eight to nine inches on this site in central Vermont since the month began, and it’s still raining hard.  The forecast calls for another inch or two to finish this week alone.  What do 10-plus inches of rain in a month mean for us?  For me as a homesteader it means some washed-out...
My Senate district, Addison County & Brandon, produces a lot of local food. This is about to change. You know what I'm talking about: S.510. There's a lot of opposition out there; however most of it concludes with the familiar write your congressman litany. With the inevitable meek acquiescence to yet another loss of our natural liberties after the shock that one's congressman is not listening. The shock that one's congressman is following a different agenda: an agenda of corporate monopoly. A big agenda. One that buys out organisations such as NOFA-VT, promising them stimulus cash and a seat at the table for squeezing out the small family farmer. The Vermont Legislature must nullify. They ignored Vermonters until 2010 when 37...
Thanks to all for your patient and kind support for the Vermont THIRTY which grew to FORTY Independent candidates! And especially to those of you who stood for election and made personal sacrifices, now and in previous years. Here's to 2012, starting today !!! Let's do the numbers. Notable for 2010 (according to WPTZ, please correct any omissions): Pete Garritano earned 7185 votes statewide! Pete's integrity and positive firm approach earned him 4% of the Vermont vote without campaigning or spending money. Dennis Steele won 1,819 votes with 95% of precincts reporting. Thank you Dennis and Jim Hogue for your excellent runs for the top office in the land, and your personal sacrifices for a Free Vermont. Colonel Dubie has conceded...
...and don't forget to hold their feet to the fire once they're in office. Mine included! Voting is a private matter. But after emerging from the booth, please stay involved, and stay in touch. As a strict constitutionalist, a Campaign for Liberty supporter and a defender of our civil liberties I have come out against these brutal, unconstitutional and unaffordable wars of empire, and I remain steadfast in condemning them AND the politicians who vote to continue funding those wars. There's a lot that can be done in Vermont from the Legislature, if you're against war. For one, Vermont funds these wars to the tune of $1.5 billion per year. This is over $8,000 per Vermont family of four per year. We need that money to remake Vermont...

[img_assist|nid=3221|title=|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=200|height=200] A Food Chain Radio RELEASE FROM METROFARM.COM You never let a serious crisis go to waste. -Rahm Emanuel To protect us from contaminated foods that come from thousands of miles away, government is passing truckloads of food safety legislation like S510, the Food Safety Modernization Act. But this effort leads us to ask… Will food safety legislation kill local food? This Saturday at 12PM EST, Michael Olson’s Food Chain Radio hosts Judith McGeary from Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance and Dr. Shiv Chopra from Health Canada for a conversation about S510, the Food Safety Modernization Act. (S510’s author, Senator Richard Durbin, has declined to participate...
[img_assist|nid=3215|title=Vermont Candidate for Governor Dennis Steele|desc=|link=none|align=right|width=404|height=332]   I was there tonight at the staged VPR debate. Vermont Public Radio has acted unethically by taking public money, then locking the Independent candidates out, doing their part to silence the Independent voice.  Shot some footage of Dennis being denied entry.  Here's what I posted on VTDigger.org... http://vtdigger.org/2010/09/02/video-analysis-dubie-wants-to-shrink-state-government-dole-out-tax-breaks/comment-page-2/#comment-7000 The economic proposals of the only two candidates that the Vermont media are allowing the public to hear, ignore the $1.2 billion/year in corporate welfare maintained by the...
When I talk about Vermont Independence, folks assume that I'm talking about 'seceding from the union'. There is no real union membership, no partnership.  Vermont, since giving up her independence in 1791, became a colony.  A banana republic. Not a state. If Vermont were a state, we would have some say over our natural resources, or get some compensation for the extraction and removal of resources.  Natural resources have low production costs and high windfall profits. Vermonters have to pay high taxes, so that companies like Nestle, Bechtel, AIG, Unocal don't have to. They put a few million into lobbying the Democrats... and get 1.2 billion in return. What other kind of business has a 5000% rate of return on investment? Not organic...
And hear our most excellent home-grown, all-Vermont Funk band, Electric Sorcery !! Playing 2:00 PM at the historic Gathering Inn, Hancock, Vermont ! [img_assist|nid=3175|title=|desc=|link=url|url=http://electricsorcery.bandcamp.com/|align=left|width=150|height=150] The doors of sound have been ripped off the hinges by Electric Sorcery who routinely electrify Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom. Towns are regularly woken out of their slumber by the by the wicked sound of this power trio. Electric Sorcery takes psychedelic music firmly rooted in the 70s and adds their own special twist. Funky rhythms and psychedelic guitar riffs come together to create an intriguing sound that is sometimes very heavy.... This is a fun listen and anyone who...
[img_assist|nid=3091|title=BirdInTheHand|desc=|link=none|align=none|width=640|height=317] Folks, As of Friday morning, I am officially on the ballot for Vermont Senator for Addison County!  Thanks to you all for your hard work and great ideas.  Your contributions have served to get the Independent word out there, encourage people to register to vote, even built a parade float. But I’m not gonna do an NPR on you and beg for even more funds.  Funds’ll come, somehow.  What’s really needed is organisational help.  I’d like to set up a community forum in Addison County every month until the election.  A forum in which people from all walks of life can address the candidates directly with concerns, questions, and even vent steam together...
